I recently returned from an incredible tour of Ireland with CIE tours. (Watch for a separate post or several about the trip!) It has been a few years since I've been on a large group bus tour and I wanted to share a few things that this trip brought to mind. A coach tour is a fantastic way to explore new destinations, meet people, and enjoy a stress-free travel experience. Here are some helpful tips to make your journey smooth and enjoyable:
1. Pack Light (and Right)
Most coach tours allow one large suitcase to check and one carry-on (like a backpack) that fits under your seat. It’s important to stick to these limits to ensure everyone’s luggage fits in the storage compartments. Be sure to double-check your tour company’s specific guidelines before packing!
2. Flexibility is Key
Travel plans can change, and flexibility is essential. Weather might make it unsafe to visit a landmark, or flight delays could impact schedules. Embrace the unexpected—it’s all part of the adventure!
3. Dress in Layers
if you’re too warm on the bus, remove a layer. If you’re too cold on the bus, add a layer. On a 40 person coach it’s going to be a different temperature at the back than it is at the front, and it will be warmer where lots of people are sitting together than if you have an empty seat beside you. Dressing in layers is a practical way to stay comfortable.
4. Get to Know Your Group
Building connections with your fellow travelers can make the trip even more enjoyable. Exchange contact information or start a WhatsApp group to stay connected during free time. It’s also helpful for coordinating if someone gets lost or is late returning to the coach.
5. Stay Hydrated
The coach will stop every 90 minutes or so, but there’s usually a bathroom on board for emergencies. However, keep in mind that on board bathrooms aren’t the most pleasant option - what goes in the bathroom STAYS in the bathroom all week, so the coach bathroom is best saved for true emergencies.
6. Take Responsibility for Yourself
Be punctual for meeting times, clean up after yourself on the bus, and communicate if you need assistance. Everyone appreciates a team player, especially on a shared journey.
7. Be Respectful and Kind
Your guide and driver work hard to ensure the trip goes smoothly. Show them kindness and respect, and extend that same courtesy to your fellow travelers. Allow your guides to speak and be heard by all the other members of your tour group. They have fascinating stories and information to share! A little thoughtfulness goes a long way in creating a positive group dynamic!
A coach tour is an adventure in itself, and these tips will help you make the most of your experience.
